Art Deco Inspired Dresses

Broadwalk Empire and The Great Gatsby movie have brought the roaring 20s back in a big way. Today my husband (on his own!) said we should get some cool outfits and do a 1920s theme photo shoot. Um, yes!!!

Naturally, I have been looking at dresses and was surprised to find some amazing styles from Dillard’s. Yes, Dillard’s. Here is a look at a few of my favorites.

Happy Father’s Day

My dad took me to a Bob Dylan concert when I was 12. I didn’t appreciate it then, but now realize how infinitely cool that was. He introduced me to record albums. Let it Bleed by The Rolling Stones and Rubber Soul by The Beatles are still my favorites.

He makes the best breakfast potatoes I have ever had. He drove me to a mall nearly an hour away so I could buy a giant New Kids on the Block button when I was 10. He put me through college, and clearly contributed to my smashing good looks.

I love you, dad! I appreciate you more and more the older I get. I don’t see you enough or tell you enough, but I love you! Happy Father’s Day!

DIY Coffee Shampoo

While skimming Pinterest the other day, I read the coffee ground and baking soda help to make your hair shiny and soft. I was skeptical, but figured what the heck, I will give this a try. I mixed two tablespoons of coffee grounds (fresh, not used, thought I am sure it doesn’t matter) with two tablespoons of my shampoo and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. I added a couple drops of water and stirred.

It feels really weird to put gritty stuff on your hair. I used about half of the mixture on my hair. The coffee grounds are messy… BUT it does make the bathroom smell like a Starbucks, and I am totally OK with that.

I left it on for a few minutes and rinsed really, really well to get the grounds out. My hair felt really clean, and I needed some serious conditioner to get it untangled.

Shiner? Yes, I think so. Softer and smoother? Um, yes, but probably more from the conditioner than the coffee.

After a quick Google, I learned that coffee, the caffeine actually, helps to promote hair growth. Given this information, I will stick with it for a few weeks and see how it goes. Upon further reading, it seems that soaking your hair in coffee will also help (and seems less messy).

Oh, and there is actually a funny story about coffee as a hair removal.

This probably goes without saying, but if you have blonde or light hair, you should not do this, as the coffee will stain your hair.

Family Pictures

Family Photos by Shelby Rodriguez I wanted to take some family photos for a while now — and by family, I mean me, my husband and our dog, Dieter. The tripod.

I’m lucky enough to work with some amazingly talented people, one being a newly graduated student from Michigan State University, photographer Shelby Rodriguez. She is amazing. Seriously amazing. I told her I wanted photos before she lands an amazing job in New York City and leaves us behind! Because I know she will! Insane talent!

She took a zillion photos, and I ended up with roughly 60 beautiful photos of my little family. The above are just a couple of my favorites. The puppy kiss will be framed and hung in our hallway, just under a photo of the three of us when Dieter was five weeks old.

It’s amazing how dogs can become part of the family, isn’t it? I know we love our shepherd like we would any child in our lives. And I don’t care what anyone says, I know for a fact that pup loves us back. I can see it plain on his face and in his bushy, wagging tail. 🙂
